Greening Our Urban Lives!
By Aaina Chopra. Love hearing the sound of the leaves rustling as the wind blows… lost count of the different shades of green; and sitting under an amazing tree that has taken so many years to be there for you to enjoy! Did you know that Trees For Cities have planted over 1.1 million trees in 26 cities and almost 100,000 are actually taking root this year! Trees For Cities work in the UK as well as across in the globe from Kenya to Peru to reach their goal of improving lives by planting trees in our urban jungles. In addition to their exceptional work planting trees, they also are helping people connect with the natural world. All this work is aimed at limiting the impact that we are having on the planet. Projects are helping build resilience against the threats facing the natural environment. Climate change is happening before our eyes, but these projects are helping us build resilience against the threats facing the natural environment. Trees For Cities work with local communities to create long lasting change in their communities. They do this in a number of ways, such as breathing life into forgotten spaces, creating healthier environments or encouraging people to do some of their own growing. Their largest project is the Urban Trees project where they have planted a wide range of tree species in communities to ensure that the structural and functional diversity in woodlands and city streets is maintained. This is vital to ensure as it ensures that pests and disease is limited. Projects, such as the one in Seven Kings Park, utilises the local community and team spirit to get residents out and planting trees! The project in November 2018 in Seven Kings, which is in East London, used the spirit of local primary school children as well as other members of the local community to plant 50 bright and beautiful new trees. They ensured that the trees would be beneficial for everyone in the park, by planting hawthorn for birds, lime for butterflies, English Oaks as shelter for birds, bats and even walnuts and mulberries for the humans too! Trees For Cities also work in a number of schools and encourage children to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. They are working on ‘planting’ healthy air in schools in London as well as creating edible playground, all of which educate and encourage the children to make use of their outdoor space. This is a positively amazing project and we are proud to be supporting them through the Positive Bunch Crowdfunding Campaign! We love this!
