10 small things [that have a huge impact] you can do every day to help change the world.
1. Treat others with kindness
We never know what others are going through. That person who cut in front of you may have just lost someone close to them and they’re panicked and not concentrating. Instead of getting angry, treat them with kindness and how you would want to be treated.
This could be making sure that you recycle your household waste, or also re-using something instead of throwing it away.
A monthly donation is a great way to give back, but it can be costly. If you can’t afford this, think about other ways you can donate. Instead of throwing things away, could someone in your community use it? Even your crisp packets can be donated – Howbury Friends collect donated crisp packets and turn them into blankets to help the homeless stay warm.
4. Walk or cycle
Do you need to take the car? If you’re taking a short journey, consider if there are other ways instead of driving.
5. Help someone
This could be as simple as holding the door for someone, helping someone to cross the road or helping someone with their shopping bags, but these little actions can have a huge impact.
6. Ask someone how they are
This seems like such a simple concept, but you never know who is struggling. In 2018, the rate of deaths by suicide rose by 10.9%, according to Samaritans. Men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, and men aged 45-49 are most commonly impacted. Asking this question can make a huge impact on someone’s life.
You may be able to commit to volunteer for an organisation on a regular basis, and that’s fantastic if you have the time. However, if you don’t, that’s OK too. Voluntary organisations don’t always need a specific time commitment. Speak to them about your situation and how you can help.
8. Tell people the positive things you think about them
We often feel awkward or uncomfortable telling people what we love about them, but it’s often the one thing people regret when that person isn’t around anymore. So if someone inspires you, has a great talent or is a kind person, tell them!
9. Stand up for what’s right
If you see something happening and you don’t think it’s right, say something. Far too often, people who suffer racism, homophobia or harassment wish that someone could’ve stood with them but despite being surrounded by people, no-one steps in. Don’t put yourself in danger, but if it’s safe to do so, stand up for what you believe in.
10. Take care of yourself
You’re unable to change the world if you’re not taking care of yourself. Make sure you keep yourself as healthy as possible, get plenty of rest and have some “me-time”. To give the best version of yourself to the world, you need to power up to make sure you have enough to give.
